3-day itinerary for a tour of East Berlin:

Day 1:

  • Start the day by visiting the iconic Berlin Wall, which divided East and West Berlin during the Cold War. Head to the East Side Gallery, the most significant remaining section of the wall, which features murals and artwork by various artists.

  • Next, visit the Stasi Museum, which is dedicated to the history of the East German secret police. Here you can learn about the methods and techniques used by the Stasi to spy on their citizens and maintain control over the population.

  • After lunch, head to the Alexanderplatz, a large public square in the heart of East Berlin. Visit the TV Tower, one of the tallest structures in Europe, for a panoramic view of the city.

  • End the day by exploring the trendy neighbourhoods of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg. These neighbourhoods are known for their street art, alternative culture, and nightlife.

Day 2:

  • Start the day by visiting the Berliner Dom, a stunning cathedral in the city's heart. The cathedral was heavily damaged during World War II but has since been restored to its former glory.

  • Next, head to Museum Island, a cluster of five world-renowned museums that house a vast collection of art and artefacts. Don't miss the Pergamon Museum, which houses one of the world's most important ancient art and architecture collections.

  • After lunch, visit the DDR Museum, which offers a glimpse into everyday life in East Germany. Here you can see a typical East German apartment, try on clothes from the era, and learn about the state-controlled economy and media.

  • End the day by visiting the Karl-Marx-Allee, a grand boulevard built in the 1950s to showcase the achievements of East German socialism. The boulevard is lined with monumental buildings and is a prime example of socialist architecture.

Day 3:

  • Start the day by visiting the Berlin Wall Memorial, which is dedicated to the wall's victims and Germany's division. Here you can see a preserved section of the wall and visit the Chapel of Reconciliation, which was built on the site of a former church that was destroyed during the construction of the wall.

  • Next, head to the East Berlin Gallery, a museum that showcases the art and culture of East Berlin during the Cold War. The museum features exhibits on fashion, music, design, and more.

  • After lunch, visit Treptower Park, a large park in the southeastern part of the city. Here you can see the Soviet War Memorial, a massive monument that honours the Soviet soldiers who died in the Battle of Berlin.

  • End the day by visiting the Berliner Unterwelten, a series of underground tunnels and bunkers built during World War II and the Cold War. The tours offer a fascinating glimpse into the city's history and are a great way to end your tour of East Berlin.
